STRUGGLING TO NAVIGATE THE CURVEBALLS?
Have you ever felt like life was throwing curveballs at you, and you were merely trying to catch up? The idea of always having a choice may seem elusive, but let me share a secret – it's the key to unlocking a powerful and fulfilling life. As a leader with a growth mindset, I've come to realise that no matter the circumstance, the power to choose is always in our hands.
FROM LOSING TO FINDING IT: COME CLOSER TO BE YOURSELF THROUGH YOUR CHOICES
Embracing the "you always have a choice" mindset is more than just a catchphrase; it's a powerful paradigm shift. It means recognising that life doesn't happen to you; instead, you have the ability to attract what aligns with your goals and values. As a growth mindset leader, I've witnessed the transformational impact of this perspective. The more you internalise it, the more you realise you hold the reins to your life's narrative.
And before you stop reading and grumble in your head - I know it is a tough act to always have it together. In our fast-paced world, it's easy to succumb to the notion that life is happening to us, leaving little room for control.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on a challenging situation - and you know what, let’s make this a work thing because THAT is where we feel the most vulnerable, because maybe, we have the most to prove there!
Perhaps a project didn't go as planned or a team faced unexpected setbacks, casting doubt on the path ahead.
As a leader in such situations, the pressure can be palpable, with the sense that circumstances are steering the ship. I get it, I’ve been there, and it’s hard to not get swept away.
However, it's precisely in these pivotal moments that the profound truth emerges – you, as a leader, retain the agency to choose your response. Tell me - does one setback, no matter how big, really decide your worth and the quality of your leadership? Do you really not have any resources at hand to course-correct, no matter how choppy the waters are?
Can you fight for the haze to lift and see the choices you have in front of you? Do you really think that external forces can withhold you from being who you’re meant to be?
Well tell me this - who dare hold the power to stop you from ultimately reaching what you are meant to be? You, and only you…so why not do yourself the favour and believe that it will all happen anyway - because it is meant to be - and YOU will make it happen!
Reject the binary of ‘Oh! It will either happen or it won’t’ and embrace the energy of making it happen.
FROM PREACHING TO PRACTISING: HOW TO START EXERCISING YOUR CHOICE
So, how do you adopt this empowering mindset? Start by taking charge in your personal and professional life. Here are some ways I was able to really rewire my default setting to accepting that the choice will always be mine:
Reflect on your reactions to challenges and setbacks. Understand your default responses and identify areas where a conscious choice can be made.
Integrate positive affirmations into your daily routine. Affirmations can reshape your mindset, reinforcing the belief that you have the power to influence your circumstances.
Clearly define your personal and professional goals. Regularly assess your choices against these objectives to ensure they align with your long-term vision.
Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles. View setbacks as valuable lessons that contribute to your development.
In the workplace, encourage transparent communication. Create an environment where team members feel comfortable expressing their ideas and concerns, fostering a sense of empowerment.
Demonstrate the "you always have a choice" mindset in your leadership style. Showcase resilience, adaptability, and a proactive approach to challenges, inspiring your team to do the same.
